Making a REAL Difference

Making a REAL Difference

Making a REAL Difference

When the world overwhelms us, we don't do anything to help it.  We tend to freeze because anything we could do feels too small and insignificant.  Social media and our ability to know national and world events emphasizes big solutions and large-scale policy.  But the reality is that change for the better comes from thousands of small acts locally - not large overarching solutions.

You can't save them all..

One of my favorite parables:

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a girl picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the girl, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” “Girl,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the girl bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, she said…” I made a difference for that one.”

Crazy enough - I actually did this literally (not figuratively) this week - I saw a starfish on the shore and I threw it back in before it totally dried out!

But on an everyday basis, my focus is to make this type of change for women.  I've helped dozens of women through one-on-one coaching.  Not hundreds or thousands - dozens.

Yes, I have reached thousands through my workshops, and it has started the process of sustainable wellness and success for many of those attendees.

But the real, transformational change is in the one-on-one coaching. Which means I can't save ALL the women.  But for these dozens of women - it is everything.

I've helped them clarify what they want, build the confidence they need to use their voice and enforce healthy boundaries, and take committed action towards their goals.  Work AND life success with more joy and less stress.

It doesn't solve all their problems - it helps them build the skills needed to solve their problems in ways that serve them instead of exhausting them.

When you read the headlines and feel despair for all of the suffering - the hungry, the poor, the addicted, the oppressed, the conflicted - don't turn away.  I know you can't fix it all.

But there is a family or individual living in your town (or nearby) who needs your help RIGHT NOW.

A meal train meal for a cancer patient.  A 1st generation immigrant who needs help filling out papers in English.  A teacher struggling to buy school supplies.  A family struggling to put food on the table.  A parent needing more affordable childcare or help with rides for their children so they can work.

You don't need to change national policy or wait for a big solution to make a difference.  You just need to do ONE thing.  Just one.

If we all did one thing for someone in our community, we would be a much happier, healthier, and more fulfilled nation.  We could build sustainable local solutions that actually work for the people who need them - all while creating stronger community ties.

Do we need policy reform and bigger institutions?  For protective reasons, yes.  But no national policy has ever helped me the way neighbors, friends, and family have.

My point is this:  everyone I know is feeling uncertain and triggered by headlines.  It is making them feel small and like they can't make a difference.  It throws them into overwhelm and inaction.  But it is a lie.

They can make a difference.  YOU can make a difference.  Not for everyone.  But for a few.  And those few matter.

YOU matter.

I'm here to help you get out of overwhelm so you can make a difference for yourself, your family, your colleagues, and your community.  Reach out and we will move out of overwhelm and into action.  TOGETHER.  Schedule a call HERE.
