September is a Transition Month

Transitions Aren't Easy

September is a transition month for most of us. Maybe your kids went back to school and your whole family is adjusting to new schedules, work is ramping back up, or you’re simply transitioning out of the slower vacation mode of summer into let’s get shit done before the end of the year mode. Whatever it looks like for you, transitions can be unsettling even when they’re taking us somewhere we actually want to go. So what actually helps?

Make September Transitions Easier

First, remember that this transition is temporary. We can’t get where we want to go without being willing to leave where we were, and sometimes that transition represents progress.

Other times, change gets handed to us whether that is a new job situation, financial circumstances, a move, a relationship change, a new schedule, or simply a new season. We may not have chosen it, but either way, the only way out is through.

Or as Socrates says, "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new." Eventually you will be on the other side of this transition, and it will be easier if you aren't constantly fighting it.

Second, come back to your foundation. When everything around you feels like shifting sand, focus on what is steady.  This includes your healthy habits, the people who support you, and the things you know about yourself.  Even coming back to your own breath can steady you.

The external circumstances may be changing, but you are still YOU. A friend summed up the unpredictability of September perfectly recently when she said, “I have this great fall sweater…and now it’s 85 degrees again!

Yep. Pretty much.

Things go up and down and spin around, and just when we think we’ve settled into the new normal, something shifts again. Instead of waiting for everything around you to feel settled, remind yourself that you have a foundation within you that you can come back to.

I’m experiencing this deeply right now as I watch my 90-year-old grandmother navigate the end-of-life transition from being here with us toward death. She's in hospice and I’m allowing myself to feel all of it.  I'm sad I'm losing her while also feeling so grateful for all the time I’ve had with her.

Watching her also reminds me that I (hopefully) have so much life still ahead of me, which means I also have many more transitions to navigate. And each one gives us a little more evidence that we are capable of doing hard things. All the way to the end.

But we don't have to do those hard things alone.  Transitions are easier with help, whether that means talking to someone, asking for help, or simply spending time with people who remind us that we aren’t the only ones figuring things out.

My mom and sister are finally here with me, and I can't explain how much better I feel.  It doesn't change grandma's prognosis, but it did help my nervous system finally regulate for a bit.

And that is the power of community.  I can pretty much guarantee you’re not the only person navigating change right now. And sometimes knowing you’re not alone makes it feel a little bit better.  It normalizes the fact that no one has it all figured out and we are all navigating the bumps of life.

If you’re in the middle of a transition and could use some help figuring out which way is up, you can set up a free strategy session with me HERE. We’ll talk through what’s changing, what’s within your control, and your next best step.

Because transitions are a part of life.  And you deserve to enjoy this life you are working so hard for!

Cheers to thriving through transition,
Sharon
