What Makes a Friday Good, Anyway?
What Makes a Friday Good, anyway?
There’s something about this Friday that always makes me pause, not because of the history behind it, but because of the question it asks. What actually makes something good? And maybe more importantly, who gets to decide?
Celebration alongside Grief
Let's be real here - the world right now does NOT feel good. It’s hard to ignore the heaviness that exists at a macro level between layoffs, war, uncertainty, and the quiet undercurrent of fear about what’s ahead. It is a lot to carry while still trying to show up fully in your own life.
And yet, life doesn’t pause while the world feels heavy.
This hits hard for me in April, which had always been a month filled with celebration: my birthday, my best friend’s birthday, several family members' birthdays including my grandmother, and usually Easter and family get-togethers.
But now it also holds loss, with my dad’s birthday and the anniversary of his passing both falling in the same month. This contrast feels disorienting, holding joy and grief at the exact same time, especially in a world that already feels uncertain.
There are moments where celebration makes me feel almost… guilty. Like how can I fully lean into joy when there is so much happening around us that feels so dark?
But the truth is there’s nothing to feel guilty about. And there is no sense holding off on celebration. I lost my dad just one week shy of his 59th birthday (12 years ago already, which also feels surreal), so I know there's no guarantee for tomorrow, no guarantee that you'll "enjoy yourself in retirement".
So instead of waiting for things to feel lighter, I’ve been getting more intentional about what feels good right now. That’s looked like saying yes to a local leadership program, getting outside more than usual, and soaking up time with my sister while she’s in town for Easter.
We’re also celebrating my grandmother turning 90! Which feels incredibly special given everything she’s lived through, even as we navigate the early stages of her dementia. It’s a feeling of immense gratitude and reality at the same time.
And then, in true “life is unpredictable” fashion, I’m heading out on an international trip with my best friend that came together a few weeks ago.
Is travel a little chaotic right now? Sure. But I’m choosing memories over TSA lines and going anyway. (And if I end up stuck in Italy - I have faith I'll find enough gelato to get me through).
Because at the end of the day, I’d rather say yes to what fills my cup than sit at home worrying about what might go wrong. That doesn’t mean ignoring reality, it just means not letting fear make my decisions for me. And leaning into my faith that I can, and will, figure things out as they come - even if it isn't easy.
I won’t be sending a newsletter next week because I’ll be off doing exactly that - enjoying life despite the state of the world. And I hope you find your own version of celebration too. Not perfect, not polished, just something that feels like you.
So maybe that’s what makes something “good” after all - choosing to live fully even when the world feels heavy.
Sending you hope, perspective, and just enough motivation to file your taxes on time ;) And to all who celebrate Passover and Easter - wishing you a happy and fulfilling holiday.
I’ll see you in a couple of weeks.
Cheers to celebrating your life,
Sharon
