The Spiral Staircase of Life (and What 46 is Teaching Me)

The Spiral Staircase of Life (and What 46 is Teaching Me)

A Reason to Celebrate

I’m coming off a week where I got to celebrate my birthday surrounded by an incredible group of women. We showed up fully as ourselves, dressed in “white and whimsy,” and honestly… everyone delivered. There was laughter, lightness, and a reminder of how important it is to pause and celebrate.  We all have some real-life issues we are dealing with.  I mean, who doesn't, right?

Spiraling Upwards

But being in that space, with women who are all so different yet so real, reminded me that life is worth celebrating.  Not someday, but NOW.

As I turn 46, I’ve been reflecting on the fact that life doesn’t move in a straight line. It feels more like a spiral staircase. We are moving up, growing, evolving… but we revisit familiar themes along the way.

And when those old lessons resurface, it’s easy to think, “Haven’t I already worked through this?”

But that’s not regression. That’s life.

Each time we come back around, we meet it with more wisdom, more awareness, more of who we’ve become. Unfortunately, growth isn’t about never struggling again.  It’s about trusting yourself more when you do.

You’ve made it through 100% of your hardest days so far. That’s a lot of evidence in YOU.  Your ability to figure things out, move things forward, and do what you have to do.

Also - I want to just admit something here....  I LOVE getting older!  Society will tell us we should hate it - hate the wrinkles, the weight gain, the fact that we aren't 22 anymore.  But every year I feel more like ME, and less like impressing everyone else.

The word authentic feels overused these days, but I feel more like myself than ever.  And while I can't sit here and tell you I don't care at all what people think of me (one of the themes I revisit on the spiral staircase often), I care less.  So that's something!

And as this group of amazing women - all dressed up in our whimsy (which included some masks, crowns, feathers, sparkle, and even some labubus) - danced and karaoke-ed in the living room - it hit me.  I want to be with more people who want to have fun and care less about what other people think.

So that's on my list going forward :)

My directive to you - celebrate the birthdays. Celebrate the milestones. Celebrate the version of you who once wished for the life you’re living now. Maybe not every hardship, but so much of the good that exists today.

And also… be honest about where you want to go next.

This reflection feels especially meaningful to me because my dad’s birthday was the day before mine, and he passed away at 58. That reality reminds me there are no guarantees, and life is too short to live in guilt or regret.

So I don’t spend much time there.

I spend time being present. Dreaming forward. Living fully.

Some days that looks like getting dressed up and celebrating life out loud. Other days it looks like wiping tears and processing something I thought I had already moved through (usually alongside some choice snacks and cookies).

Both are part of it.

If you’re in a season where things feel heavy, or like you’re circling back to something familiar, you’re not behind - you’re human. No one ever "arrives".  No one ever gets to a place where they've learned all the lessons, and everything goes smoothly moving forward.

But there are ways to enjoy more of the journey.  If you’re craving more lightness, more clarity, and more intention in how you move forward, that’s exactly the work I love to do.

Because this is your life. Your time. And it’s worth living fully - in every phase of the spiral.

Cheers to another year,
Sharon
